Llywelyn ap Iorwerth

Llywelyn "Fawr" ap Iorwerth (the Great), ruler of the Principality of North Wales, was born 1173 in Aberffraw Castle, Caernarvonshire, Wales, and married Joan Plantagenet, Princess of England (c. 1190 - February 1237/38) in about 1206.  Being that what's bred in the bone comes out in the flesh, expecting fidelity from Joan might have been a little much - she was born as a result of an adulterous relationship between King John "Lackland" Plantagenet (December 24, 1166 - October 19, 1216) and Agatha de Ferrers (b. c. 1168).

Joan embarked on a love affair with the Lord of Abergavenny, William de Braose (1204 - May 02, 1230), the grandson of William de Braose the "Ogre of Abergavenny" and Maud de Saint-Valery (see The Murder List) through their son Reginald.  Whereas William de Braose's wife Eva Marshall could do little about the antics of her husband, the Prince of North Wales, less than pleased with the behavior of his wife, had more or less unlimited power to deal with her as he wanted.

Llywelyn was actually fairly leinient with his wife; she was thrown into prison.  William de Braose did not escape with so easy a sentence.  "Black William", as he was termed, was publically hanged on Llywelyn's orders.

William de Braose is my 22nd, 24th and 25th great grandfather through my father's father, my 25th and 26th great grandfather through my mother's father; Joan Plantagenet is my 27th great grandmother through my mother's father and my 29th and 30th great grandmother through my father's father. Llywelyn ap Iorwerth is my 27th great grandfather through my mother's father and my 29th and 30th great grandfather on my father's father's side.
